Chapter Eight

Malaki was off for the next two days, and had spent most of the day high up in an oak tree in his panther form, but eventually, it was time to come down. He wanted to see Cheyenne, and he hoped she was at the dorms getting ready to eat with her elders.

He stepped into the kitchen area where he found her uncle sitting at the table, drinking a glass of water. Ella and Gianna were just starting to plate the meal they’d made.

“Could you wake up Cheyenne?” Gianna asked.

“Sure,” he replied, turning for the living room where he’d seen her sleeping when he arrived.

As he approached, Malaki tried not to let his gaze linger on her body. If he was being honest with himself, he would realize that the female was perfect for him. If he could get past his hatred for what he’d become and the self-loathing thoughts, he could see himself settling down with her someday soon.

“Cheyenne, wake up,” he said, trying to soften his voice as much as possible. He was an asshole, but he wasn’t so much of one that he would boldly yell at her to bring her out of the slumber she obviously needed.

“Hmm,” she hummed as she stirred. “Malaki?”

“Yes, it’s me. Dinner is ready when you are,” he told her, backing away when she began to sit up.

The moment he started to turn away, the blanket slipped off her arm, and there in bold red against her ivory skin were four gashes; one of which was stitched closed.

“What the fuck happened to you?” he bellowed, causing the elders to rush out of the kitchen to come see what was going on.

“Experiments,” she barked. “I agreed to let the healer cut me. What’s your problem?”

“You let him hurt you?” Malaki was seeing red across his vision. Harold was a good man, considered an elder now, but that didn’t stop Malaki from wanting to rip out his fucking throat. “I’ll kill him.”

“Oh, calm yourself,” Cheyenne said as she came to her feet. She skirted past him, heading for the kitchen, and he followed close behind. The beautiful woman spun on him. “You have no rights to me, and you have no claim to kill the healer for what I approved him to do. Geez, are you always such an asshole?”

“Usually,” he gritted out, knowing he was still a bit of an asshole. With her, he felt different, and it had nothing to do with being a jerk. He was concerned about her well-being. He hurried around her, stopping at the entrance to the kitchen. He didn’t say anything, because he was trying his hardest to calm his beast.

“I think I’ll take my meal in my room,” she replied, cursing when he wouldn’t move out of the way. She backed up and crossed her arms while glaring a hole through him.

Malaki stood there for several seconds but moved out of the way when she snarled at him. He turned away and faced the back door, taking deep calming breaths.
